It’s a big question, but it only takes us 16 minutes to answer it.
Hey, we get it: the anxiety about AI is valid. I think all of us freelance copywriters will have missed out on some work because the likes of Charlie and Gemima have sucked it up.
Meanwhile, more and more people are using AI tools and calling themselves copywriters. It is, at its core, a very efficient method of producing average work. I understand the appeal…if there was a way to earn lawyer money using AI tools, I’d be on that like a rabbit on an upturned ice cream container.
Aside from the dubious ethics, is there anything wrong with that? Well…time will tell, but both Martin and I firmly believe that reliance on AI tools will atrophy your creative muscles.
That’s an important warning. Because copywriters have so much more to offer than writing. We are creative problem solvers. Production is not what makes us successful; it’s solving client problems. Getting results. Selling stuff.
But that warning triggers another warning: do not be too precious about your craft. A blanket avoidance of AI tools is (a) impossible, and (b) shortsighted. Just as you need to know the rules before you break them, you ought to learn the tools before you forsake them.
That’s all for now. We’ll be back with more of your questions soon! Don’t forget to keep submitting them, whether it’s comments here/on LinkedIn, via email (bravenewwordpodcast@gmail.com) or by shouting at Martin through his letterbox.
Ta ra.
